CNC Machinist (Gainesville, FL)


Produces machined parts by programming, setting up, and operating a computer numerical control (CNC) lathe or mill machine; maintaining quality and safety standards; keeping records; maintaining equipment and supplies.

Job description:

  • Studies blueprints, drawings, manuals, specifications, or sample part to determine dimensions and tolerances of finished work piece.
  • Selects, aligns, and secures holding fixtures, cutting tools, attachments, accessories, and materials on machines such as mills or lathes.
  • Calculates and sets controls to regulate machining factors such as speed, feed, coolant flow, and depth and angle of cut, or enters commands to retrieve, input, or edit computerized machine control media.
  • Starts and observes machine operation to detect malfunctions or out-of-tolerance machining, and adjusts machine controls or control media as required.
  • Observes numerical displays on control panel and compares with data on process sheet to verify dimensional adjustments, feed rates and speeds of machining cuts.
  • Inspects first run piece and spot checks succeeding pieces for conformance to specifications.
  • Studies job packet and organizes materials for next run during automatic program controlled cycles to shorten changeover time.
  • Loads feed mechanism by lifting stock into position.
  • Monitors cycle time per traveler.
  • Inspects/changes cutting tools when dull.
  • Confers with engineers, production personnel, programmers, or others to resolve machining or assembly problems.

Competencies and qualifications:

  • Minimum 3-5 years’ experience in CNC lathe or mill programming, set-up, and machine operation.
  • Experience and familiarity using Fanuc control panels.
  • Experience performing full set-ups, program edits, and holding tolerances as tight as +/- .0001″.
  • Complete understanding of machine control management, including mastering of all machine code terminology, usage, and control panels.
  • Awareness of cutting tool technology, to support application optimization.
  • Comprehensive understanding of speed and feed for material, such as stainless steel and aluminum alloys.
  • Ability to communicate application status both to department team and shop level associates, in terms of application status, issues, and requirements.
  • Trouble-shooting skills and ability to think critically.
  • Must be able to work independently, but also demonstrate an ability to work productively within the department team.
  • Blueprint reading.
  • Ability to work with mathematical concepts such as portability and statistical inference and fundamentals of plane and solid geometry and trigonometry. Ability to apply concepts such as fractions, percentages, ratios, and proportions to practical situations.
  • Understanding of general machine shop procedures and safety awareness.
  • Knowledge and experience with manufacturing environments.

Education and experience:

  • High school diploma required.
  • Certificate in CNC Machining or an associate’s degree in Machining Technology preferred but not required.
